The Glory of Progress

At first I didn't realize

That things needed to be a certain way

Everything has happened how it should

As the sun sets at the end of another good day

But at first I didn't realize

That I needed all these things

We used to look for happiness elsewhere

Instead of living life like kings

And still I didn't realize

That our problems don't need mending

Unless it increases turnover

Or reduces corporate spending

Yet at first I didn't realize

That it's fine if people die

It's survival of the fittest

So clearly they just didn't try

But why did I not realize

That other people are not real

They're just pieces, not players

Another spur in the corporate wheel

And if you're not part of the steamroller

Then you're just a part of the road

This is neither good nor bad

It's just how progress goes

Even now I do not realize

The darkness I hide inside

I dismembered my own humanity

Just to feed my sense of pride

I go to whatever lengths I must

To justify the fight

In a desperate hope that when my final sun sets

I'll be ready for the night

At first I didn't realize

That things needed to be a certain way

Everything has happened how it should

As the sun sets at the end of another good day
